Quick Reminder: FDA Cosmetic Labeling Guide
Proper labeling is not just a legal requirement; it's a safety issue. The FDA has specific guidelines for how cosmetic products must be labeled in the United States to ensure consumers have the information they need.
Key Labeling Requirements
A compliant cosmetic label must generally include the following:
- Principal Display Panel (PDP): The part of the label most likely to be displayed or examined under customary conditions of display for sale. It must include:
- Identity Statement: The common or usual name of the product (e.g., "Perfume", "Lotion").
- Net Quantity of Contents: An accurate statement of the net amount of product in the package (e.g., "50 ml / 1.7 fl oz").
- Information Panel: Generally the panel to the immediate right of the PDP. It must include:
- Ingredient Declaration: Ingredients must be listed in descending order of predominance.
- Name and Place of Business: The manufacturer, packer, or distributor.
- Warning Statements: Any necessary warnings required by regulation or necessary for safe use.
