Brief rant about Limonene!

Limonene is everywhere. It's in your orange juice, your cleaning products, and yes, your fine fragrances. It's a fantastic molecule – fresh, uplifting, and naturally occurring in the oils of citrus fruits. Yet, it often gets a bad rap.

The Misconception

Limonene itself is generally safe. The problem isn't Limonene; it's what happens when it oxidizes. When exposed to air and light over time, Limonene can form hydroperoxides, which are known skin sensitizers. This has led to strict labeling requirements and, in some cases, the demonization of this beautiful ingredient.

The Solution: Antioxidants

The key to using Limonene safely is proper handling and storage. By adding antioxidants (like BHT or Tocopherol) to raw materials and finished products, we can significantly slow down the oxidation process. This allows us to continue enjoying the fresh, citrusy benefits of Limonene without the high risk of sensitization.

Let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater! With good manufacturing practices and proper stabilization, Limonene remains a vital part of the perfumer's palette.
